Ways to Reduce Your Cat’s Carbon Paw Print – KittyNook Cat Company

You may not have thought much of it before, but the products we use to care for our pets substantially impact our environment. From the use of plastic bags to dispose of pet waste to chemicals found in shampoos to outer packaging in toys and food production, caring for a pet affects the world.

As you change to a more eco-friendly way of living, here are small ways to make caring for your pet sustainable; we know that everything may apply to your lifestyle, and that’s okay! Doing some can still go a long way toward making your cat eco-friendly.

Changes to Buying Habits

changes to buying habits

The most impactful way of reducing your cat’s carbon paw print is by changing your purchasing behaviors. This means that rather than getting your cat’s commercial (big store) name litter, look for eco-friendly alternatives first.

There would be a big positive change if many of us did it. Plus, it will send a message to greedy commercial businesses, which income at the expense of the atmosphere!

It’s also helpful to consider product packaging. You can reduce your waste by getting items in bulk or seeking products with recyclable or multiple-use packaging.

Finding Alternatives to Traditional Kitty Litter

Finding Alternatives to Traditional Kitty Litter

While dog poop is compostable, our cat’s feces is not. This is because of toxoplasmosis, a parasite that can live in feline feces and cause harm to humans. For the same reason, you should not flush feline feces into water systems.

Feline litter is the most common way of handling cat waste. Many traditional litters consist of bentonite, a high-absorbency clay that can hold eight times its quantity in water. It globs and binds well, making it ideal for daily waste collection. Nonetheless, bentonite is sourced commercially through harmful strip mining. Using eco-friendly or locally-sourced alternatives can lower the carbon footprint of your cat.

Earth-friendly choices to bentonite clay-based litter have both advantages and disadvantages, which we listed below. Be prepared to try a couple, as you or your cat could prefer something besides the first one you try. Also, some products may be more expensive than traditional litter.

  • Paper pellets or shreds: Paper pellets can be made from recycled paper fibers and are a dust-free and soft choice for clay. You can make your paper shreds free of cost, but the paper does not clump and needs to be cleaned more frequently. It also does not have odor control, so you must add things like baking soda.
  • Wheat: This litter option is eco-friendly, clumps well, and has little dust. Nevertheless, it can stick to the sides of the box, making cleaning harder.
  • Wood shavings or pellets: Wood litter alternatives are biodegradable, lightweight, and smell pleasantly of wood when cleaned regularly. A con is that wood shavings or pellets can be messy. You will also need to research the wood used, as some wood species are toxic to pet cats.
  • Walnuts: Made from the ground or crushed walnuts, this litter type generally has a pleasant smell and clumps well. However, these can have dirt included and can stain things when dampened.
  • Grass pellets or granules: This option is soft and biodegradable with minimal dirt. However, it can be too light for bigger cats, who may have trouble remaining atop it. It also lasts for a relatively long time.
  • Corn: There are two main varieties of corn litter, ground kernels and ground cobs. Both are naturally degradable. However, the latter is more environmentally friendly. You can also use corn layer crumbles for chickens. Nonetheless, corn does not clump, so odor control isn’t fantastic, and it has an odor that might not be for everyone. It will help if you replace it routinely to avoid mold and mildew and drawing in critters.

Better Cleaning Supplies

Better Cleaning Supplies

Not only are organic and natural active ingredients much better for your pet and their skin, but they’re also much safer for the environment. Traditional hair shampoos and conditioners frequently include a myriad of rough chemicals that can irritate your pet’s skin and have significant risks if swallowed. And those same chemicals can pollute rivers, damaging fish and wildlife.

Fortunately, natural grooming products are easily sourced and are frequently reliable for keeping your furry friend fresh and clean. You’ll want to avoid products including synthetic dyes and scents, parabens, sulfates, and mineral oils.

Next time you need to clean a pet mess, try one of these alternatives:

  • White vinegar: This can be used instead of some ammonia-based cleansers, offering a comparable streak-free shine without the extreme fumes.
  • Baking soda: An odorless, non-toxic mild bleach alternative. Mix this with water, not vinegar, and cleanse away light messes or odors.
  • Hydrogen peroxide: An anti-bacterial disinfectant and strong oxidizer, you can use it to remove mold and mildew and clear up some discoloration. You can also mix it with warm water to scrub hard floors. Be suggested that it can cause some lightening or moderate staining for materials, so always patch test first.
  • Fluid castile soap: A vegetable-based soap that breaks up grime and oil where water alone won’t cut it. Do not mix this with vinegar, as it can reduce the efficiency of the soap.

Remember to use a recyclable towel or rag instead of single-use paper towels. Along the same lines, avoid adhesive-based lint rollers from removing pet hair from clothes and furnishings. Choose a waste-free device like a velvet animal hair brush, pet hair vacuum, or other multiple-use devices.

Help Regulate the Pet Population

Help Regulate the Pet Population

Adopting from your regional shelter and neutering your pet are two impactful ways to keep the pet population in check. It’s a win-win! Doing so reduces the overall impact of animal waste, food waste, and pet products on the environment—it also helps ensure there’s a caring home for every pet.

Final Thoughts

You can take action today to help minimize your cat’s carbon paw print. Natural products are better for our cats as well as our homes. Not only will you be eco-friendly, but these products will also benefit your cat.

Let’s spend our dollars on products and brands we trust! With each other, we can make a favorable impact on the cat community.

Lone Kitten Stuck in Drain Pipe Gets Help and is Reunited with Her Cat Family

A lone kitten who was stuck in a drain pipe, got help and was reunited with her cat family.

drain pipe kittenCatsnip Etc

Workers at a factory in Elkhart County, Indiana found a feral cat mother with her kittens needing rescue. While they were trying to get the kittens to safety, one of them panicked, dashed towards a gutter, and jumped straight down.

« The gutter guard was broken. The plastic gutter pipe went three feet down and then angled out to a manhole pipe, » Missy McNeal of Catsnip Etc told Love Meow. « The little kitten slid down to the bottom and it was too slippery to climb all the way back up. »

The workers reached out to Catsnip Etc when they had exhausted all their options to save the kitten.

Upon arrival, rescuers began trying different ways to find which pipe, in the maze of underground pipes, that she had taken refuge in. After many hours of extensive search with a camera, they still weren’t able to locate the elusive kitten.

It was close to midnight and very dark outside, so they decided to come back in the morning with new ideas. Several members of the community and Miller Sewer Cleaning joined forces to free the drain pipe kitten the next day.

« We came up with the plan to run water down the pipe that she jumped into, and try to follow the path the water took to figure out where she was. » The plan worked, and they were able to pinpoint the manhole connected to the pipe of interest. « It was nowhere close to where she fell and we could have never located it. »

In order to retrieve the kitten safely, it would require a brave, non-claustrophobic person willing to scoot through a narrow, dirty pipe with about an inch of sitting water.

Ashlee saw the plea for help from social media and offered to take on the mission. « She came to the address, went down the manhole and never looked back, » Missy told Love Meow.

The lone kitten saw Ashlee emerging towards her, and she came right to her. She was so ready to get out after about 40 hours underground. « No one can imagine the sense of relief we all felt when Ashlee yelled she had the kitten. »

The little one was immediately wrapped in a towel as she was soaked, muddy, and freezing cold. They rushed her home to dry her off and started warming her up with a heating pad and warm fluids (she was extremely dehydrated).

« We gave her some Karo syrup for her low blood sugar and finally syringed her some food when she was warm enough, » Missy shared.

Meanwhile, rescuers were able to get the rest of the feline family into foster care, and no one was left behind. As soon as the solo kitten perked up, they reunited her with her mom and siblings.

« She ran right up to her family and snuggled under her mom’s chin. »

The drain pipe kitten was just half the size of some of her littermates. She was so glad to be back with her crew and nuzzled up to her mom for some extra TLC.

« They are working on being socialized and getting lots of love. »

It took a village and over one day to save a tiny kitten. Now the little one can enjoy all the luxuries that come with indoor life along with her mom and siblings.

« The little drain baby is much perkier and up to 11 ounces. What a little fighter! »

Opera Cat Steals The Show In Viral Video That Proves He’s A Purrfect Diva

The feline species has long been rich with talent and charm, producing prodigies on paws that amaze us at every turn. Maximino is one of these cats of extreme ability and is not shy about sharing his gift of song. The fluffy diva wants everyone to enjoy his melodious voice so much he’s got no problem stealing a spotlight.

Captured on camera stealing cat lady and opera singer Maura’s moment, Maximino has also stolen the hearts of millions of TikTok users in a viral video showcasing his talents.

TikTok

A Purrfect Duet

Ten years ago, Maura moved from Mexico to the U.S. to train in classical singing. But as she told Newsweek, it’s been a while since she had a chance to perform.

“The last time I sang with a legit opera company was back in 2018 when I was getting my music degree,” Maura said. “I then transitioned to being a choir director, but I miss performing.”

Instagram

But thanks to her cat Maximino, a TikTok post has put her back in the spotlight, with the video of their impromptu duet garnering more than five million views and almost a million and a half likes.

The short clip, posted to @maura.music on TikTok, opened with Maura beautifully singing an opera piece. As she readied for the next chorus, Maximino jumped onto her desk, hogging up the space. Maura tried to scoot the pushy floof out of the way, but the furry boy had other ideas.

TikTok

And before Maura could release another note, Maximino took up the tune, singing in tempo with the bouncy rhythm. Watching the clever cat perform, Maura laughed at Maximino’s stellar debut, creating an extra layer of adorability to this cute cat video!

TikTok

When he concluded his solo, Maximino simply hopped down and walked away with a catittude that smacked of “concert over, cherish the experience, no encores from this kitty!” Well, at least not at that moment.

Further postings from Maura have revealed Maximino as a regular singer who doesn’t mind meowing out a tune in duet with his massively talented human.

TikTok

Music Appreciation

It’s easy to see that Maura and Maximino were meant for each other as they both share a passion for singing. Maura tells Newsweek that their dedication to music binds them, “He loves music, and the only way I can get him to follow me is by whistling his favorite tunes.”

TikTok

She also reports the furry boy often “screams” to get what he wants most, her attention. Maximino sounds like a right purrfect diva! And that others find so much joy in her dear kitty warms Maura’s heart.

“I could not believe so many people were reacting and posting so many sweet comments,” shared Maura. “It made my day, and it made me happy to share smiles with others.”

National Take Your Cat to the Vet Day

cat-veterinarian-stethoscope

August 22 has been designated as National Take Your Cat to the Vet Day, and while it may not be your cat’s favorite “holiday,” it’s an important day designed to raise awareness about the importance of regular veterinary check ups for cats.

83% of cats are taken to the vet during the first year after they’re adopted, yet over half of them never return for subsequent wellness visit. Given that cats age more rapidly than humans and are masters at masking illness, these statistics are worrisome.

If your cat is overdue for her check up, today is the purrfect day to make an appointment.

The American Association of Feline Practitioners is offering a wealth of resources to help you prepare for your cat’s next check up, ranging from reasons why check ups are so important to how to reduce the stress of a vet visit for both your cat and yourself. You can find more information on their website and Facebook page.

Family Took in Stray Kitten without Knowing They Needed Her Just as Much as She did Them

A family took in a stray kitten without knowing they needed her just as much as she did them.

cuddly black kittenEllah the kittenFoster Kitten Mama

Three years ago, Heidi Shoemaker said her goodbyes to a beloved young friend named Bellah, and was left with a heavy heart. Later that same day, she received a message about a tiny kitten needing help.

Heidi, who runs a cat rescue, Foster Kitten Mama, immediately responded to the plea. « She was an orphaned kitten found alone in a scorching Walmart parking lot in August. I have no idea how she survived, » Heidi told Love Meow.

« The kitten was only about two weeks old. I felt I needed to go get her. »

Heidi picked up the kitten and was instantly smitten with her. The scruffy little one was very timid and looked at Heidi with her sad doe eyes.

« It sure was love at first sight when those beautiful blue eyes looked into me, so sad and scared. I named the new baby Ellah, after our friend, Bellah–a way to honor her life. »

« From then on I carried her with me, bottle-fed her and my heart melted. »

Over the next few days, Heidi nursed Ellah back to health and introduced her to other kittens in the house. But the mini panther kitty would rather cling to her foster mom and be cradled in her arms all day long.

Ellah continued the cuddling streak with Heidi each day, and showered her with the most soothing purrs.

Despite having foster siblings to hang out with, Ellah chose to follow Heidi everywhere, like her little shadow. She became Heidi’s closest confidant, a staunch friend, and the cuddliest purr machine.

« After a few weeks I realized I was getting incredibly attached. Over a month in, I knew I couldn’t give her up. I just knew I couldn’t adopt her to someone else when she was already part of my heart, » Heidi told Love Meow.

Heidi’s husband witnessed just how much Ellah meant to his wife, and that she healed her broken heart. He was on board with making the kitten a permanent member of their family.

The former parking lot kitty has blossomed into a gorgeous cat with the sweetest temperament.

She continues to accompany Heidi everywhere from the moment she wakes up in the morning to when she curls up next to her mom at night.

Food Allergies In Cats: Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis & Treatment

This article aims to explain the details of food allergies in cats. The aim of this article is to provide a simple, clear explanation about this common type of allergic disease for pet owners.

What Are Food Allergies?

Food allergies in pets are allergic reactions to proteins in the food, with inflammation of various parts of the body following an allergic reaction to those proteins (allergens). Food allergies (also known as food sensitivity) are seen in dogs and cats, with dog food and cat food being equally prone to provoking an allergic reaction.

How Common Are Food Allergies?

Cat food allergies are a common problem, causing 12 – 21% of cases of cats with itchy skin. They are also a common cause of inflammatory bowel disease in cats, causing signs of gastro-intestinal disturbance, such as vomiting and diarrhea

How Do Cats Get Food Allergies?

Affected cats may have a genetic predisposition to develop this allergy-based condition, but in most cases, there are no known specific causes, and food allergies are not more common in some breeds than others.

Symptoms Of Food Allergies In Cats

Clinical signs associated with food allergies include:

1. Skin Inflammation

  • Pruritus (itchiness, with scratching all over, licking the feet, etc)
  • Otitis externa (ear infections)
  • Recurrent skin lesions and skin infections (pyoderma)
  • Alopecia (baldness)
  • Miliary dermatitis (roughened patches of scabby skin)
  • Eosinophilic granuloma (raised areas of pink, sore-looking skin also known as eosinophilic plaques)

2. Inflammation Of The Digestive Tract

Causes Of Food Allergies In Cats

cat food allergy

Any food ingredient can provoke an allergy. The most common food allergens are beef (18%), fish (17%), chicken (5%), with wheat and corn.

This is an immune-mediated disease (a disease of the immune system), with affected cats seeming to have a genetic predisposition to developing food intolerance or hypersensitivity to allergens in their food.

Any food ingredient can provoke an allergy. The most common food allergens are beef (18%), fish (17%), chicken (5%), with wheat, corn, dairy products and lamb (less than 4% each).

Other less commonly reported culprits include eggs, pork, rabbit, whale meat, and barley. Carbohydrates are less likely to provoke allergies than proteins. Cats can have an allergy to more than one food ingredient at a time.

Diagnosis Of Food Allergies

If your DVM veterinarian suspects that your cat may have food allergies because of skin problems or digestive upsets, the following steps may be taken.

Detailed History Taking

Your vet will discuss every aspect of your cat’s health and lifestyle. A general history is important (e.g. sneezing, coughing, other signs of illness) to gain a full picture of the cat’s health. There are other causes of the same types of signs as food allergies, and this history will help to differentiate the various possible causes.

Itchiness caused by food allergy tends to happen all year round, while other types of allergic skin disease (eg atopy, or environmental allergies) may be seasonal (eg related to pollens). A good dietary history is essential, with close scrutiny of the cat’s diet, including details of all current and previous pet foods, the precise type of food, snacks, treats, medications, and toys.

If the food allergy is causing gastrointestinal signs, the same principles apply: a thorough dietary history is essential.

Physical Examination

Your veterinarian will check your cat over carefully.

If itchy skin is the manifestation of the food allergy, particular attention will be paid to examining the skin, noting the precise nature and pattern of the lesions in the skin, including itchy areas and areas of hair loss.

Reddened areas (erythema), nettle-sting-like rashes (papules and wheals) and excoriations (areas of self-damage by scratching) may be seen. Affected areas may include the armpits (axillae), groin (inguinal area), under the tail (perianal), around the eyes (periocular), around the mouth (perioral) as well as the ears and head.

If gastrointestinal disease is the issue, then a thorough all over examination is important.

Skin Tests

If the food allergy is manifesting as itchy skin, your veterinarian may suggest a number of skin tests to investigate the problem. Some primary veterinarians my prefer to refer you to a vet with a particular interest in dermatology (a veterinary dermatologist) for some or all of this work up to be done. Thorough parasite treatments (e.g. implementing thorough flea control) are often needed to completely rule out skin parasites

Fungal Culture

Ringworm (dermatophytosis) may need to be ruled out by culturing skin and fur samples.

Skin Scrapings And Cytology

Itchiness is commonly caused by parasites such as flea allergy, lice, demodex, notoedres and others, so these need to be ruled out. Bacterial infections/ yeast infections need to be identified too n case they are aggravating an underlying allergy.

Skin Biopsy

A skin biopsy does not reveal specific changes that allow the direct diagnosis of feline food allergies, but histopathology of a sample of skin does allow the ruling out of other differential diagnoses.

Gastrointestinal Tract Tests

If the food allergy is manifesting as suspected inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), further tests may include ultrasound, blood tests and ultimately, a biopsy of the stomach or intestinal wall to confirm the diagnosis.

Therapeutic Trial With Special Diet

A food trial or Elimination Diet Trial (EDT), offering only a special limited antigen diet with a restricted protein source) for 6 – 12 weeks is the only definitive way to rule in or out food allergy.

The cat must have access to nothing else other than the special hypoallergenic diet for this duration. If the cat improves during the elimination trial, then the diagnosis is confirmed, while if the cat continues to show signs of inflammation (either skin or digestive tract) then the diagnosis is ruled out.

Sometimes at the end of the trial period, a dietary challenge may be tried, deliberately stopping the exclusions and feeding the suspected offending allergen to see if there is a reaction. Often, however, this is not done, because understandably pet parents do not want their cat to develop signs again.

How Much Does It Cost To Treat A Cat With Food Allergies?

cat food allergies

The Avg. cost to treat a cat with food allergies is 50 to $150 per month for ongoing care per cat.

The cost depends on many factors of individual cases. You should ask your veterinarian for a detailed estimate before agreeing to proceed with treatment. Typically it may cost $400 to $1000 to carry out an initial work up, then $50 to $150 per month for ongoing care, including a special diet as well as anti-allergic medication.

Treatment For Food Allergies

There are a number of treatment options.

The cornerstone of treatment is feeding only a restricted diet that does not contain any of the allergens which provoke a reaction. This may be the limited ingredient diet that was used for the food trial, or it could be a different diet.

Also Read: Elimination Diets For Cats: What You Need To Know?

There are various commercially produced diets that are generally recommended, or it is also possible to home-prepare a restricted protein diet.

Two types of restricted allergen diet are available:

  • Novel protein diets, which are limited antigen diets where the particular protein has not been eaten previously by the cat. Examples include venison, rabbit, specific fish, and others. These diets may be commercially prepared or home-cooked (eg made using human food ingredients). The best commercial diets are prescription diets (made by companies like Purina and Hills) generally obtained via your veterinarian, as over the counter pet shop sourced products are more likely to include common allergens or other extra ingredients that may provoke an allergy.
  • Hydrolyzed protein diets are limited antigen diets where the protein has been hydrolyzed (pre-digested) into smaller fragments of protein (peptides) which are very unlikely to provoke an allergic reaction.

Anti-allergic medication such as corticosteroids or glucocorticoids (e.g. oral prednisolone) may be used as an additional way of damping down the allergic signs. Long acting depot glucocorticoid injections are a useful alternative for cats that are difficult to medicate.

Essential fatty acid (EFA) supplements may help in the long term by optimising skin health and so reducing the dose needed of stronger medication like corticosteroids.

Calcineurin inhibitors such as cyclosporine (“Atopica”)and tacrolimus are immune system modulators which may be useful as part of long term treatment.

Other more recently developed anti-inflammatory medication like Oclacitinib (“Apoquel”) may not yet be licensed for cats, but may be recommended by veterinarians for certain cases.

Shampoos and baths may help some cases (e.g. specific medicated baths if malassezia infection is aggravating itchiness).

Digestive tract medication may be used to help with signs of vomiting or diarrhea.

Monitoring And Prognosis

Since the main sign of food allergies is itchiness or gastrointestinal upset, it is generally simple for owners to monitor this disease, although regular veterinary check ups are helpful. Most cases respond well to treatment with a restricted diet.

Conclusion

Food allergies commonly cause allergic skin disease and gastrointestinal disease, causing itchiness and skin rashes or gastrointestinal disturbance in cats. They often need lifelong management with a long term special diet and sometimes ongoing medication under veterinary supervision.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you treat food allergies in cats?

A combination of treatments is usually needed, including a long term special diet, plus sometimes  anti-inflammatory oral medication, essential fatty acids, and topical products like shampoos and baths.

How can I treat my cat’s food allergies at home?

If you can identify and remove the cause of your cat’s food allergies (e.g. a particular diet) then home treatment may be possible by allergen-avoidance. You can also use freely available products like essential fatty acids and shampoos at home. However, for other anti-inflammatory medication that may be needed, a veterinary prescription is needed, so you will need to visit the veterinarian.

What can I put on my cats itchy skin?

Your vet may be able to offer you anti-inflammatory creams or sprays for particularly itchy patches of skin, but in most cases, the skin disease will resolve as long as the allergy-provoking food is avoided.
